What is Fiestas Patrias & Hispanic Heritage Month?

Fiestas Patrias

On September 16, 1810 - Mexico won its Independence from Spain and Fiestas Patrias (Patriotic Festival) became a national celebration, a patriotic holiday in Mexico. Fiestas Patrias was kicked off by “The Grito” or “The Shout of Freedom” by Priest Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla from Colima, Mexico. This “shout” was felt country wide as an expression of liberty and is widely celebrated all over Mexico today. Millions of people attend annual Fiestas Patrias events in cities across the United States as an homage to their cultural history.

Hispanic Heritage Month

Each year, Americans observe National Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15th – October 15th by celebrating the history, cultures, and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, Central and South America. The U.S. Hispanic population reached 60.6 Million in 2019. (worldpopulationreview.com)

Sunday September 14th, 2025

A family festival in the heart of downtown Colorado Springs, bringing people from diverse Hispanic origins to create a cultural fusion! This full-day event will provide live music & dancing, mexican wrestling, vendor booths, and plenty of food. This will also help to generate revenue from rural areas and the rest of Southern Colorado.

On September 13th, 2022, in Colorado Springs

Colorado Springs City Council made a historic recognition of the Hispanic community by unanimously consenting to recognize September 15th through October 15th as Hispanic Heritage Month. Fiestas Patrias was a part of the historic recognition that several Latina women including several from The Latina Equity Foundation received as a part of their efforts in the community.

In 2018 Moni Hernandez CEO of VIVA Digital Marketing had a vision to see downtown Colorado Springs filled with Hispanic culture. She met with Cory Arcarese the Chair of The Thrive Networks in 2021 and they both agreed that a festival of its kind was needed in our community. That is how Fiestas Patrias was founded.

Cultural events provide us with a sense of belonging and connection to our heritage. Fiestas Patrias celebrates the customs, values, and achievements of our ancestors, reinforcing our cultural identity. It allows us to acknowledge and honor our roots. Recognizing our cultural heritage gives us a sense of pride, self-acceptance, and authenticity, boosting our overall mental health. It provides opportunities for people from various backgrounds to interact, share experiences, and build relationships.

Let's remember to celebrate what makes each of us special every day of the year!
